In3: The Nation’s First Inclusive Incubator

Wingate Hughes Architects is the firm behind DC’s Inclusive Innovation Incubator (In3) design. It is a one-of-a-kind, inaugural, public, private, academic partnership between the Office of the Mayor, Howard University, and Luma Lab. With a vision of true inclusive entrepreneurship, In3 is the first incubator in the country focused intentionally on diversity and inclusion.

In3 is slated to open April 2017, and a few design details are being wrapped in the next few weeks. Take a sneak peek look inside In3 …

The 8,500 square foot multi-level space has 22-foot ceilings with an open collaboration environment that includes small, large, and expandable private offices. The entryway features a custom, floating reception desk with a coffee bar and complimentary beverage access.

There are 13 shared four-person offices and one large six-person office that divides with a Skyfold partition to become two smaller three-person offices. The industrial warehouse ceilings broaden the open aesthetic of In3 and feature Waldermann LED Architectural Tubular Lighting and T-Bar LED Smart lights. The lighting design is environmentally friendly and illuminates the large space. The suspended acoustic sound baffles soften background noise.

There are two additional open-space innovation lofts above the first floor’s perimeter aisle offices which provide impressive views of the incubator and a quiet spot to get away. Sylawn artificial turf grass carpets the lounges, providing a more relaxed loft vibe and the custom metal ship ladders are a fun way to access the elevated lofts. When completed, lounge furniture will fill these spots and rails will protect users from the edge.

BuzziSkin wall covering in the private offices and classrooms offer acoustic privacy and tackable surfaces. The color-changing columns (which will be wrapped in panels when construction is completed to enhance the LED experience) brighten the open office space. The stairwells, loft rails, and classroom and office feature walls feature Luma Lab’s color palette. The flooring on the first level features a three custom-colored gradient LVT that seamlessly transitions from the front to back of house.
